Women's Health in South Tyneside (WHiST) was originally set up in 1985 by a group of local women. Operating from a room in Flagg Court they offered advice and information on a voluntary basis. From their contact with local women they identified unmet needs and gaps in service provision. They applied for grant aid to support the work they were doing and the project became a registered charity. From these humble beginnings the group of volunteers secured funds for a full time and a part time post. Over the years the project has continued to respond to needs identified by its users and has flourished into its present form.
Our premises were designed by an all woman team of architects, staff and project users, and were built in 1999 with funds raised from a variety of sources. An extension was added to the premises in 2005 providing additional training and counselling provision.
