Women's Health In South Tyneside was originally set up in1985 by a group of local women. Operating from a room in Flagg Court they offered advice and information on a voluntary basis. The demands placed on the service they offered led them to apply for grant aid to employ staff and the project became a registered charity. Over the years the project has continued to respond to the needs identified by its users and flourished into its present form. After years of being based in various unsuitable places the project was successful in their fundraising efforts and built new premiseson a town centre site. The premises were designed by an all women team of architects, staff and project users, and were completed in 1999.            The project remainsdependant on it's volunteers. They are involved at all levels throughout the project, from sitting on the management committee to running the coffee bar, organizing fundraising events and undertaking administrative tasks.

The project promotes a wide range of integrated health provision and services. Provision ranges from one to one counseling, self help and support groups, advice and information and various courses aimed at improving self-confidence gaining new skills. these including basic computing, understanding various complementary therapies, physical activities and ongoing talks on all aspects of health delivered by a wide range of specialists. Some courses are accredited and nationally recognized certificates can be gained. Our work is complementary to existing provision and women are increasingly advised to attend by a variety of local professionals, including Health and Social Services. By working in partnership with various agencies including Tyneside Rape Crisis Centre, Citizens Advice Bureau women are able to access specialist services. There is a high demand for our services, which is reflected in waiting lists for all provisions on offer. We recognize the value of linking up with specialist agencies in the borough, building networks and drawing on appropriate expertise to provide an effective and comprehensive service and raise issues of concern to women.
